Baltimore Sun: The City Shines Again on DVD

The Baltimore Sun reviewed "The City, calling it "a fresh look."

The Sun noted:

This Great Depression-era product has now re-emerged on DVD by Naxos, with Post-Classical's freshly recorded soundtrack, just as the country is in the grip of the Great Recession and the air is full of talk about government projects, large-scale and green. Seems like great timing...

That score, here conducted by the ensemble's music director, Angel Gil-Ordonez, with his usual care and expressiveness, comes through as vibrantly as the camerawork. This is particularly true in the brilliant urban scenes. It sounds as if Copland had more fun composing music for those city shots; that's where the music really jumps out at you.

P-CE helps Strathmore Celebrate with Carnival of Creatures

Baltimore Sun: Free to Sing "Thoroughly Persuasive, Classy"

The Baltimore Sun reviewed "Free to Sing: The Story of the First African-American Opera Company," saying, "It was a thoroughly persuasive, classy performance that paid fitting tribute to the forgotten Eichberg and the little-known ensemble of black singers that made its bold mark with his music more than a century ago."

The Sun had this to say about the Post-Classical Ensemble:

The orchestra of the Post-Classical Ensemble played with an admirable sheen. Conductor Angel Gil-Ordonez brought to the score delightful rhythmic flexibility and lyrical nuance.

Baltimore Sun: Bringing 'The City' back to life

The Baltimore Sun's music critic Tim Smith heralded the P-CE's live performance of Aaron Copland's score alongside the 1939 World's Fair film documentary The City.

Smith notes:

That's still not all. After the presentation, the audience will get to step, you might say, directly into the film itself. The movie's last sequence, promoting a new kind of model city built from scratch, includes footage of one such place - Greenbelt, which this year celebrates the 70th anniversary of its creation under the guidance of the Resettlement Administration during the era of the New Deal. After the screening of The City, there will be a field trip by bus to Greenbelt for a panel discussion and dessert reception.

Baltimore Sun: P-CE's "Soul-Touching Music"

The Baltimore Sun has followed up its preview with due diligence and published its review of the Post-Classical Ensemble's performance of Gustav Mahler's "Der Abschied" (Farewell) from Song of the Earth and the premiere of a piece by Zhou Long inspired by Mahler.

The D.C.-based Post-Classical Ensemble is all about new things, and new light on old things. Friday night at the Clarice Smith Center, those two motivations came together for a fascinating exploration of Der Abschied (The Farewell), the last movement from The Song of the Earth, Gustav Mahler's indelible reflection on mortality and the comforting continuity of nature.
